The recovery of hydrocarbons from the cleanup of froth produced in the hot water process of removing bitumen from tar sands is enhanced by contacting the aqueous phase separated from the froth (i.e., the aqueous tailings) with a diluent for the bitumen, recovering an organic phase containing diluent and bitumen and recycling this material into the froth cleanup process. The process is also applicable to the recovery of hydrocarbons from other aqueous tailings containing them.
|
