High-temperature voltaic cell with a hermetically sealed metal housing and fixed fused electrolyte

A high-temperature voltaic cell 1 of the Li alloy/salt melt/heavy metal sulphide system has, in view of the air sensitivity of the Li, a metal housing 4 with a hermetically sealing ceramic pole bushing 6, 7. The fused electrolyte is fixed in a matrix 5 of extremely fine ceramic material having a large internal surface area. This restricts the tendency of the fused electrolyte to creep and prevents an attack by the Li, which could otherwise be transported by the electrolyte from the negative electrodes 2 to the pole bushing, on the brazed joints 8 between the ceramic and the housing metal. <IMAGE>
