PURPOSE:To produce a memory effect by applying voltage between two electrodes placed opposite to each other to color an electrochromic layer and by retaining the colored state of the layer even when short circuit is caused between the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:An electrochromic layer 13, a solid electrolyte layer 14, a semiconductor layer 15 and a counter electrode 12 made of gold or the like are successively laminated on an electrode 11 made of an electrically conductive transparent film coated on the surface of a glass substrate 10. Electrons e<-> are emitted from the electrode 11 to the layer 13, and positive holes (h) are emitted from the electrode 12 to the layer 15. The electrons e<-> and the positive holes (h) are mutually donated and accepted by electrochemical reactions at the interface between the layers 13, 14 and at the interface between the layers 14, 15. Water contained in the layer 14 is electrolyzed into hydrogen ions H<+> and hydroxyl ions OH<-> by applied voltage, and the hydrogen ions H<+> are implanted into the layer 13 by the electrochemical reaction at the interface between the layers 13, 14 to color the layer 13. |
