A multi-step, cemeted carbide roller has a diameter range of from 7/32 inch to 1/2 inch. The roller adds thermal resistance during hot forming and when coated with arsenic acid and cobalt adhesive has a protracted working life. The roller has an inner and an outer layer. The outer layer is tungsten carbide (45-72 vol. %), tantalum carbide (5-13 vol. %), and Co(23-42 vol. %). The inner layer is Co (24-43 vol. %), and the remainder is tungsten carbide. The inner and outer layers form the roller body on a sintered surface.
