The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for monitoring kegs prior to their reuse. With the aid of this monitoring, it is to be established whether the kegs have not been emptied using CO2, opened and/or used for other purposes, that is can show particular impurities, deposits, foreign substances or foreign bodies in the keg interior. This object is essentially achieved according to the invention in that the gas present in the keg is analysed, for example the O2 content is determined.
