Hitherto, special inert gas producers, e.g. combustion chambers, have been provided for the maintenance of an inertised gas atmosphere in a drying apparatus for drying combustible solids, especially for drying coal. The danger exists here that, especially when the combustion space of the combustion chambers is aerated, detonation or even a gas explosion can occur in the system, leading not only to a disturbance of operation but also to possible damage to the combustion chamber or the drying apparatus. According to the invention, however, these disadvantages are prevented in that the combustion chamber (1), especially before being placed in operation, is evacuated and filled with inertising gas. <IMAGE>
