According to the method, in order to install the gantry crane, the following operations are carried out: starting from a position in which the legs 5a, 6a of the frame 4 form a very open upside-down V, in which the ends of the legs are connected by an articulated joint 21, the base of the legs 5a is pulled towards the base of the legs 6a so as to close the V and straighten the legs to a vertical position. After this operation, the beam 9 and the forepeak 10 of the gantry crane are hoisted into the space 31 located between the legs. Used particularly for installing very high gantry cranes, intended for loading and unloading containers in harbour installations. <IMAGE>
