The device consists of a vessel 1 divided into two unequal volumes 2 and 3 by a partition 4. A pump 10 and pipework 12, 11 and 8 allow the substrate to be transferred from the volume 3 towards the volume 2, producing a difference in level between the two volumes. The transfer results in the raising of the sediments, the entrainment of the light components towards the wall 4, their fall into the volume 3 and the remixing, their forced passage through the pump 10 and their redispersion in the volume 2. The process makes it possible to keep all the content of the vessel homogeneous by recycling at regular intervals, and to break up a crust which forms at the surface. The device and the process according to the invention can be applied to the homogenisation of fluid mixtures of all kinds and are particularly suited for the continuous methanisation of organic substrates. <IMAGE>
