A process and apparatus for the continuous fulling of material strings are described, and in these a mechanical processing takes place all-round perpendicularly to the direction of run of the material string, and the material string is additionally processed mechanically opposite to the direction of run. The mechanical processing all round the material string is preferably carried out by means of two fork-shaped elements which have mutually offset segments bent towards one another and which are driven towards one another and apart from one another. The mechanical processing opposite to the direction of run of the material string is carried out by means of upsetting pistons.
