PURPOSE:To enable the detection of abnormality even when the value in the normal measuring range is outputted, by counting the regular repetition of the state of 2-phase pulse signal in order to detect abnormality of an angle of rotation detector for detection of the angle of rotation by the 2-phase pulse signal. CONSTITUTION:A direction discriminator 240 detects the direction of rotation utilizing the phase relationship of a 2-phase pulse signal and a counter section 250 calculates the pulse edges in the phases A and B according to the positive or negative direction of rotation. As a result, the output V3 of the counter section 250 indicates the displacement of rotation. When a detector is abnormal, two states of the 2-phase pulse signal are repeated alternately. This apparatus judges that the angle of rotation detector is abnormal when such a condition is detected continually fixed times. This enables the detection of abnormality even when the value in the normal measuring range is outputted and when this apparatus is used as abnormality detector for detecting steering angle of a power steering unit, the abnormality detection can be done quickly.
