Valve for shutting off or opening a cross-section of flow which is surrounded by a housing and through which a fluid can flow, in particular in the form of a shut-off and/or control element for gases such as air, in particular in the form of a non-return valve, with a valve seat which surrounds the cross-section of flow and with a valve element which is assigned to the valve seat and, in a first operating position, in the case of a fluid pressure acting in (a first flow) direction on the valve seat, comes to rest in a sealing manner on the valve seat and which, in the case of a fluid pressure acting in the opposite (second flow) direction, in a second operating position, lifts off from the valve seat and permits a corresponding flow of the fluid, the valve element consisting essentially of a flexible diaphragm, at least one section of which is fixed to the housing and the valve seat being a valve surface which faces the valve element and against which the valve element comes to rest in a sealing manner in the first operating position (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
