In a device for boiling eggs, comprising a heating device, a receptacle for at least one egg, a setting device for the boiling period or the desired hardness of the egg and a disconnecting device for disconnecting the heating device after a specific boiling time, for the purpose of achieving a defined cooked state independently of the shell thickness and the size of the eggs provision is made of a light source (7) for transilluminating the egg (16) to be boiled, a light-sensitive sensor (12) for detecting the light intensity, penetrating the egg (16) to be boiled, of the light source (7), and a discriminator device, connected to the setting device (14) and the sensor (12), for the intensity determined by the sensor (12).
