The invention relates to a housing design for exhaust catalytic converters, which deflects the exhaust gases in order thereby also to heat the carrier matrix from outside more rapidly and uniformly, as a result of which the "light-off temperature" is attained more rapidly, especially in the case of cold starting, idling and the lower partial load range. This housing construction also results in a uniform flow through the carrier matrix over its entire cross section, which brings with it an increase of the conversion rate and a longer working life. In addition these uniform pressures over the cross section allow the entire catalytic converter assembly to be designed very flat, which offers particular advantages for subsequent fitting to old vehicles. The improved heating behaviour can also be utilised in order to shift the catalytic converter more towards the "cold end". A further possibility stems from the possible perforation of the side wall of the deflection pot, which also allows the catalytic converter to become a silencing element. <IMAGE>
