A compressor has a casing cylinder (30), a working-piston stage (31) which is driven within the casing cylinder (30) in a reciprocating manner, an inlet (34) controlled by the working-piston stage in the manner of a sleeve valve, an outlet (35) and an axial, sleeve valve-like extension of the working-piston stage (31) for the purpose of controlling the outlet. In order to achieve a compact construction with a central exhaust-gas discharge it is provided according to the invention that the working-piston stage (31) subdivides the cylinder chamber into two working chambers (32, 33) and that the extension of the working-piston stage (31) consists of a tubular piston (40) past whose outer shell the adjacent working chamber (33) can be connected to the outlet (35), and through whose inner duct (45) the other working chamber (32) can be connected to the same outlet (35), in a cyclically alternating manner. <IMAGE>
