Shipping cask and/or storage container for radioactive substances, having a flangeless container casing, a cover insertable in the container casing, a cover support on the container casing, a sealing device and a closure device. The container casing and the cover consist of cast iron, e.g. spherolithic cast iron or cast steel. The cover has a rim on the end face which bears on the inside against the container casing and is provided with a circumferential cover closing groove. A mating groove on the container casing is assigned to the cover closing groove. A closing wire is inserted into the closing grooves via a feed bore which opens tangentially into the closing grooves. <IMAGE>
