PURPOSE:To obtain a colored liquid crystal, having high specific resistance and improved electrical characteristics and light resistance life and stable for a long period, by dissolving a dyestuff in a liquid crystal under an inert atmosphere to prepare the aimed colored liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A nematic liquid crystal or smectic liquid crystal and a dyestuff are charged into a container without dissolving out impurities, normally a quartz container, and the interior of the container is deaerated and replaced with an inert gas, e.g. N2 gas or Ar gas, to provide a closed state. The closed container is then set in a shaker and shaken at, e.g. 10-90 deg.C for about 1-6hr to dissolve the dyestuff in the liquid crystal. The resultant liquid crystal is filtered through a fluororesin filter having about 0.2-1mu pore size, as necessary, to afford the aimed colored liquid crystal product.
