PURPOSE:To prevent temperature runaway with simple constitution by operating an auxiliary fuel electrode arranged in an air electrode liquid chamber when temperature in the air electrode chamber exceeds a specified value. CONSTITUTION:The temperature in an air electrode liquid chamber 4 is sensed with a temperature sensor 10, and the signal is sent to a controller 12. When the temperature exceeds a specified value, a switch 11 is turned on by a command from the controller 12, and an auxiliary fuel electrode 6 arranged in the chamber 4 is operated in addition to a main fuel electrode to conduct electrochemical reaction on the fuel electrode. Thereby, methanol diffused from a fuel electrode liquid chamber 3 to the chamber 4 is consumed and methanol concentration is decreased and catalytic combustion on an air electrode 7 is retarded and the temperature in the chamber is decreased. When the temperature is decreased below a specified value, operation of the electrode is stopped by a command from the controller 12, and only the electrode 5 operates. Therefore, temperature runaway can be prevented. |
