Continuous prepn. of finely divided metal particles is carried out by (a) applying a release coating onto one or both sides of a continuous carrier sheet in an amt. of 0.75-1.50 lbs of coating per ream per side of the sheet, (b) depositing a film of thickness 350-450 angstroms of Al, Cr, Cu, steel, Ag or Au directly onto the releasing coating, (c) passing the composite through a solvent to solubilise the release coating but which is inert to the metal, (d) removing the metal film in particulate form from the carrier sheet and collecting these particles free of releasing coating in a solvent inert to the metal, (3) concentrating the metal particles and (f) breaking the metal particles to a size dia. of 25-50 microns. The metal particles from step (f) may be concentrated to a solid concn. of 5-15% and the particle size dia. may be further reduced to 10-20 micron dia. Very thin, bright metallic flake pigment particles may be rapidly formed for use in printing inks and coatings.
