PURPOSE:To improve the rust and corrosion preventiveness of a steel material by a dry plating method by projecting shots of a Zn alloy or the like on the surface of the steel material and melting the shots by heating in a specified atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Zn or Zn alloy shots or shots each having a Zn or Zn alloy layer on the surface is projected on the surface of a steel material. The surface of the steel material is then heated to 420-800 deg.C in a nonoxidizing or weakly reducing atmosphere or in vacuum to melt the shots and to form a plated layer. Thus, the blasted surface can be sealed without oxidizing, so the rust and corrosion preventiveness of the steel material can be improved without exerting any influence on the steel material. This method is useful to temporarily prevent the rust of steel stock or to pretreat steel stock before painting.
