It is proposed, in order to produce a modular system for the manufacture of a universally usable cutting machine, to design the drive casing in such a way that it can interact with a pot shaped cutter, the taper of which accommodates a cutter cover, is situated at a distance from the cutting edge and is entirely overhung by the drive casing. Furthermore the drive gear wheel which is fastened to associated flat cutters is designed in such a way that its effective region, which interacts with the drive pinion of the drive unit, is at a distance from the rear of the cutter which approximately corresponds to the depth of the taper of a pot shaped cutter which can be used with this machine. <IMAGE>
