Water-insoluble graft copolymer particles consist of the free radical graft copolymerisation product of an ethylenically unsatd. monomer (I) and a water-soluble cationic prepolymer of RSV 0.1-2.5 (1% in 1M NaCl at 25 degrees C). The prepolymer moiety is present on the surface of the particles and is used t 1-25 wt.% based on (I). The monomer (I) is methyl or ethyl alpha-chloroacrylate, methyl, isopropyl or phenyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or styrene or alpha-methyl-styrene which can be ring-substd. by 1, 2 or 3 CH3 or Cl gps. The prepolymer is an addition polymer of 2-100 mole % of a cationic monomer. CH2=CR1-CH2-N+R2R3-CH2-CR1=CH2 X-, where R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl, R2 is H, alkyl or substd. alkyl, X- is an anion and R3 is H, 1-4C alkyl, -CH2CHOHCH2Y, -CH2CH CH2 or -(CH2CH2O)nH where Y is OH or halogen and n >=1, with 0-98 mole % of a monoethylenically unsatd. amide. Used as a lightweight filler to increase the opacity of paper without detriment to its strength.
|
