Electrochemical process for the preparation, by substitution of the SNR 1 type of compounds of formula <IMAGE> in which - E denotes selenium or tellurium and - R denotes an organic, especially aromatic, residue chosen from the group comprising benzene derivatives, polynuclear arenes, polyarenes and heteroaromatics, characterised in that the cathode used is an electrode C1 comprising, in contact with a conductive matrix 1 of large developed surface, inert towards the electrolyte, of selenium and/or of tellurium metal 2 in a form which imparts to this metal a developed surface which is sufficiently large for the reductions, on the one hand, of the metal constituting the cathode and, on the other hand, of the organic, especially aryl, halide used as raw material, can be carried out simultaneously.
