The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of lactam derivatives of general formula I: <IMAGE> in which n represents 2 or 3; Im represents an imidazolyl group, which can be substituted; Y represents a group (CH2)m, in which m represents 2, 3 or 4; or Y represents a group X(CH2)p, in which p represents 2 or 3, X represents an oxygen atom, a sulphur atom or a group NR4, in which R4 is a C1-6 alkyl group, and X is bound to the benzene ring moiety of the molecule; and of the physiologically acceptable salts thereof and the physiologically acceptable solvates thereof. The compounds of formula I are powerful antagonists selective for 5-hydroxytryptamine in the 5-HT3 receptors and are useful, for example, in the treatment of psychotic lesions, anxiety, and nausea and vomiting. Said preparation process consists for example in alkylating a compound of formula (II): <IMAGE> with a compound of formula (III) <IMAGE> or with a protected derivative thereof, in which L is a separable group.
