A-B diblock copolymer (A = methacrylic monomer, secondary or tertiary alkyl acrylate or vinylaromatic monomer block, and B = a primary alkyl acrylate block), the number-average molecular weight of A being 2000-300,000, and that of B 2000-200,000, and the polydispersity value of the copolymer being 1.2-2.2. To prepare it, the anionic polymerisation of A is first of all conducted with the aid of an initiating system comprising at least one initiator R-M (M = alkali or alkaline-earth metal and R = alkyl containing a C2-C6 straight or branched chain or aryl or arylalkyl) and at least one alkali metal alcoholate R1OM1 (R1 = alkyl containing a C1-C6 straight or branched chain, aryl or arylalkyl, and M1 = alkali metal, provided that when M1 is lithium, R = aryl or arylalkyl), to obtain a living chain of A, and the latter is then reacted with B in the presence of the initiating system from the first stage.
