Ignition of a continual series of explosive or propelling compsn. units of definite size is used for driving i.c. engines. Pref. the units are enclosed in a narrow doubled roll of paper or other thin-film material. The rolls are placed in cassettes, from which they are unwound, the size pref. being suitable for drives of 500-1000 km and more. The explosive may be solid, plastic or granulated form. It pref. is a weather-proof safety explosive which leaves no combustion residue and pref. is sensitised with boosters, eg. borax. USE/ADVANTAGE - The system is esp. usefgul in a Wankel engine, which normally has a high fuel consumption, even when modified to give an absolute seal.xp
