The taste and aroma of tobacco are improved by finely dispersing an emulsion over the tobacco. The emulsion comprises an emulsifier, an aq. phase and an oil phase. The oil phase contains 10-40C hydrocarbon(s), fatty acid(s), fatty alcohol(s) and/or vegetable wax(es). The oil phase is 60% or less of the emulsion. It contains at least 50 (at least 80) wt.% odourless, tasteless, non-volatile oil. The emulsifier is water-soluble or water-dispersible. It is at 0.05-20 wt.% of the emulsion, esp. 0.1-10%. The aq. phase also contains water-soluble tobacco additives, esp. flavourings, casing cpds. humectants, pH-regulators, organic acid salts or inorganic acid salts. The emulsion also contains oil-soluble tobacco additives, esp. flavourings. The aq. phase also contains up to 2 wt.% of thickening agent. The oil phase also contains up to 60 wt.% oil-soluble co-emulsifier. The emulsions and shaped tobacco prods. made from tobacco treated with them, are new.
