A catalyst supported on an inorganic substance is given formula MaS, where M is RhCl3 xH2O or RhCl(CO) [P(C6H5)3 2; S is an inorganic support such as γ-alumina, active carbon, silica, TiO2, MgO or ZnO; and a is the wt.% of the metal. In the production M and S are added to distilled water and heated to 50-100 deg.C. After deposition, it is dried at 90-150 deg.C. The production of ethylidene diacetate of formula (I) is also claimed. Methyl acetate, 20-70 wt.% methyl iodide, CO, hydrogen are reacted in the presence of catalyst (I) and 3-picoline at 90-250 deg.C, under 20-70 atms. The catalyst can be easily separated from the product.
