Process for the electrochemical reduction of (hydro)peroxide-contg. substances - requires no chemical additives and reduces the peroxide value in substances using universal process

Process for reducing the peroxide value in substances contg. grease, oil, fatty acids, phospholipids or their derivs. comprises electrochemically reducing the peroxides and/or hydroperoxides present in the substance. Pref. the substance is molten or dissolved in a solvent (mixt) and the peroxides or hydroperoxides are then electrochemically reduced. The solvent is pref. an alcohol (mixt.) and the soln. pref. contains 1-99 (5-80) wt. % (hydro)peroxide-contg. substance. Electrochemical reduction is pref. carried out until the desired peroxide value is obtd., pref. for 2 sec-6 hrs. (10 mins-4 hrs) at 50-400 As per 10g substance using e.g. vortex bed form electrodes. The cathode is pref. steel, carbon, graphite, lead dioxide or magnetite, and is esp. carbon felt. The anode is pref. platinum, carbon, lead dioxide, magnetite and/or graphite. Pref. electrochemical reduction is carried out in a non-partitioned electrolysis cell or in a cell with a membrane partition. Where the substance is dissolved in a solvent and a conductive system, pref. a conductive (esp. an acidic) salt or phospholipid, is provided on the anode side of the partitioned cell. Electrochemical reduction is pref. carried out continuously. Pref. the substance is a phospholipid fraction, esp. a fraction contg. at least 70 wt % phosphatidylcholine, the electrolysis pref. being carried out in a partitioned cell with the phospholipid fraction being dissolved in a solvent and the conductive system being a phospholipid.
