<p>The requirements with respect to minimum detail size are less stringent when a part (10) of a column sub-electrode (2<d>) or the part of a pixel (3) defined thereby is rendered opaque in a bistable pixel (ferroelectric LCD, STN) in which grey levels are realised by dividing column electrodes (2) into column sub-electrodes (2<a>, 2<b>, 2<c>, 2<d>).
