The invention relates to a method for controlling the application of ink in a printer on the basis of colorimetric detection of the print quality of the printed products. The object of the invention is to provide a method which, while using a colorimetric detection of the print quality, allows more satisfactorily for the peculiar features of the human eye. This object is achieved in that a.) the measurement signals acquired by the measuring points of the print image area by means of colour sensors are fed to a computer system for the purpose of computational detection of the colour tone, the brightness and the saturation, which computer system determines these values using colour space models which are known per se, b.) the computer system determines the change in the print colours from the changes in the values of the colour tone, the brightness and the saturation by a comparison with set values, with identical modes of measurement, of "sample sheets", the value for the saturation being used, together with the value for brightness, in order to differentiate the dark print colours from the bright ones, and c.) to the values of the colour tone of the measurement points ... colour spacing tolerance values for each colour tone area which correspond to the human sensitivity of the eye are fed to the computer system and evaluated together with the said colour spacing tolerance values.
