A method comprising the steps of placing an object (12) in an ionisable gas (22) adjacent to at least one electrode (24), creating a voltage differential between conductors (14) and the electrode (24), and observing any flow of current that may occur between the conductors (14) and the electrode (24) as a result of a leak in the insulating means (18). The method is useful for checking the electrical imperviousness of the connecting splice insulating means in electrical cables, conducting wire insulation coverings, etc.
