The image signal field distinguishing circuit comprises a measuring unit for measuring the time interval from a horizontal synchronization right before starting a vertical synchronization to the vertical synchronization in an odd or even field; a maintaining unit for maintaining the measured value of a previous field measured at the measuring unit for 1 field, renewing this value to a measured value of the present field and maintaining this renewed value as the measured value of previous field; and a determining unit for comparing the output value of the measuring unit with the measured value of the maintaining unit and determining if the present field is an odd field or an even field.
