The document is encoded character by character (4 ) to produce a series of symbols. The translated characters are stored in a file (8). The form of the translated characters is different to the letter forms. The file is stored on a data support. A bijective conversion law (11) is established to translate the stored symbols to an alphanumeric character or punctuation mark so the text can be displayed on a screen or on a printer. The characters are made up of graphic components that do not have direct significance in the display language. The conversion law is stored on the data support, and used to decode the stored data.
