Under the ash-tray lid (18), a stalk-mounted ball (32,38), penetrating an aperture (56) in the ash-tray rim (12), is secured by a bent spring latch (34) attached to a concealed block (54). A sheath (48), containing a piano wire (46) ends (48B) in the block, with the wire end (46B) lying on the stalk axis; the other end (48A) is terminated in a side extension (52) of the cigar-lighter connector block (28), the wire continuing into the lighter socket (24), past the terminal casing (26). When the user pushes in (F) the lighter body (14,22) to heat the element (14B), a collar (58) on the body transmits this motion to the wire end (46A). The other end (46B) rises (F1), disengaging the ball catch (34,38). The spring loaded lid then opens.
