The image coding device using adaptive pattern quantization comprises a pattern quantization means for M x N difference signal between expected frames and a coder for coding the pattern quantized image. The pattern quantization means includes: a quantization pattern code book(100) having a plurality of N x N quantization patterns constituted by an one-dimensional quantizer(Qk); a quantization pattern selector(60) for selecting a quantization pattern in which an error value is lowest; and a quantizer(50) for performing pattern quantization for a delayed difference signal supplied from a delayer(90) which delays the input signal(30) for a predetermined time period, on the basis of the selected optimal quantization pattern suppled from the quantization pattern selector(60).
