Oxy-cutting of a metal component such as a continuously cast billet comprises applying, a disposable flat (20) on one face (3) of the component (1) to be cut opposite to the face (2) to be attacked by the oxy-cutting jet (50). This disposable flat (20) is arranged along the trajectory which follows the oxy-cutting jet (50) in a manner to remain next to the cut as it progresses in order to collect the molten metal that adheres to it. At the end of the cutting operation this disposable flat (20) with the attached metal splashes is detached from the component. The disposable flat (20) may be attached by welding, clamping or pinning. The disposable flat (20) is either a plane metal plate or a bar with a round or oval section. Also claimed is a device for the method comprising a system applying the disposable flat (20) onto the component to be cut and a system for positioning the application system that is enslaved with the system for controlling the position of the oxy-cutting torch to lock the disposable flat with the trajectory of the oxy-cutting jet.
