A network interface (30) for coupling a computer node (12) to a network (11) has a physical interface (31) which is coupleable to the network (11) for coupling the network interface (30) to the network (11). The network interface (30) is coupleable to the computer node (12) through a high-speed serial bus (32) which has a latency and a signal transmission rate sufficient to enable transmission of signals between the network (11) and the computer node (12) without interim storage of the signals in a buffer on the network interface (30). In a preferred embodiment, the computer node (12) has a processor (33) capable of processing network protocols and the signals may be transmitted between the network (11) and the computer node (12) without processing of the network protocols by a processor on the network interface (30).
