A housing seal (6,8) through which a shaft passes is held by a retaining adapter ring (9). The seal is located within a sealing chamber (5) with the adapter ring (9), and the shaft seal (6,8,17) is sealed by the adapter ring. The adapter ring may be of L-shaped cross-section with a uniform external diameter (11) but with a stepped and graded inner diameter (12, 13). A second adapter ring (20) could be located within the larger inner diameter of the adapter.
