A process for coating the walls of a steelmaking vessel with slag between heats to protect the refractory liming of the vessel uses coolant in the form of recyc led slag as a substitute for fluxes such as lime and dolime to cool and thicken slag s which are otherwise too fluid to produce an acceptable slag coat.
