FIELD: organic chemistry and chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of synthesis of substituted phenanthrolines of the general formula (I) <EMI ID=0.102 HE=36 WI=33 TI=CHI> where R<SB>1</SB> means ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl; R<SB>2</SB> means phenyl, propyl, isobutyl, pentyl; R<SB>3</SB> means propyl, isobutyl, pentyl, hydrogen atom; R<SB>4</SB> means ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, hydrogen atom. Method of synthesis involves interaction of o-phenylenediamine or 8-aminoquinoline with the corresponding aliphatic aldehydes or the corresponding aliphatic or aromatic aldehydes at mole ratio = 1:(2-4), at 140-160 C for 6-8 h in the presence of catalyst containing praseodymium trichloride, organophosphorus compound (PR<SB>3</SB>) and dimethylformamide at mole ratio = (0.5-1): (2-4): (4-15). The yield of the end products is 50-80%. The synthesized compounds can be used in analytical chemistry and as semiproducts for synthesis of compounds showing pharmacological and pesticide activity.
