PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To treat or reverse a diabetic sequela, diabetic cardiomyopathy, physiologically giving adverse effects by administering a therapeutically effective amount of an aldose reductase inhibitor into a human patient of the diabetic cardiomyopathy. SOLUTION: This method for treating the diabetic cardiomyopathy of a human patient requiring the treatment of the diabetic cardiomyopathy comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of an aldose reductase inhibitor comprising a compound of the formula (R1 is OH, a prodrug group capable of being released in vivo to produce the compound of the formula, wherein R1 is OH; R2 , R3 are each H, trifluoromethyl, fluoro, chloro, bromo) [e.g. 3,4- dihydro-4-oxo-3-(5-trifluoromethylbenzothiazol-2-ylmethyl)phthalazin-1 -yl-acetic acid].
