The banknote sorting device receives a stack of banknotes in an insertion compartment (2) with a separation device (19) for feeding the individual banknotes to a transport system (4) with an integrated checking device (6), controlling the delivery of the banknotes to a number of alternate reception compartments (12-15). The insertion and reception compartments are positioned relative to the front face of the banknote sorting device so that the banknotes are fed past the checking device in the direction of their longer sides, before displacement into the reception compartments in the direction of their shorter sides.
