Polymers obtained by the reaction of 40-70 parts weight (pts. wt.) acrylate, 25-55 pts. wt. styrene and 0.5-5 pts. wt. alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic acid, in which monomer input is varied in 2 stages to enable (1) polymerisation of an acrylate-rich mixture to 40-70% conversion, followed by (2) polymerisation of a styrene-rich mixture. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of emulsion polymers from the above proportions of acrylate, styrene and unsaturated acid, in which monomer feeds are adjusted during polymerisation as described above.
