Removal of organic compounds from aqueous solutions, e.g. sulfonium salts from brine

An aqueous solution is purified of organic compounds by: (a) bringing the pH of the solution to at least 13; (b) heating the solution at at least 100 deg C for at least one hour; and (c) gradually adding chlorine-comprising oxidizing agent(s) to the solution.
