The suspension damper strut for a motor vehicle has a compensator for different longitudinal expansion between the strut cylinder and a casing. The compensator (5) is formed by an axially elastic section (6) of the cylinder wall (2), with a greater length than that of the piston guide rod (7) or that of the base valve (4). The elastic section is formed by polygonal sections ribs (9) in the wall.
