A silencer for the exhaust gasses from a burner has a widened section of duct (1) lined on the inside with a sound absorbing layer (2). The exhaust gasses pass through a central duct through the padding bounded by a perforated sleeve (4) which separates the gas duct from the padding. The two ends of the silencer have tapering padding (9) held in position by tapering perforated sleeves. The exhaust gas flow includes components at right angles to the tapering sleeves for added sound absorption. The tapering sections of the perforated sleeve can also be contoured to enhance the sound absorption.
