A compressor for hydraulic pressure has a stepped piston in a closed housing, with pneumatic pressure applied to a larger piston face (5) and with a smaller piston face (7) generating the higher hydraulic pressure. The low pressure pneumatic input line (18) is threaded through the stepped housing and has a sealed sliding fit through the pneumatic piston (3), and reaches to the bottom of the pressurized air space. The duct passes through the non pressurized air space (37) which is vented via sliding seals (20,21) for the air duct and a guide rod (16). The top of the housing has a hand grip (30) which protects the top of the compressor if it topples over, i.e. it protects the high pressure outlet valve and pressure gauge. The compressor is portable.
