The present transfer apparatus for elongated pieces, such as wood boards, beams, planks, etc., comprises an inlet conveyor, a loading device and an outlet conveyor. The inlet conveyor feeds in an abutting and side by side arrangement the boards to the loading device which separates the boards from one another and conveys them individually onto the outlet conveyor where the boards lie in a parallel and spaced relationship. The loading device comprises a rotatable drum defining a support surface and provided with an outwardly extending separation and lugging blade. A motor or the like rotates the drum about a rotation axis which is parallel to a direction of travel of the boards and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the boards as they are fed upstream of the loading device by the inlet conveyor. The blade extends substantially helically about the drum with the drum and the blade being configured to allow a leading board to reach an upstream end of the support surface with the blade then separating as it rotates the leading board from upstream boards positioned on the inlet conveyor and causing the leading board to gradually translationally displace along the support surface and to a downstream end thereof where the leading board is discharged from the loading device onto the outlet conveyor. The blade also acts as a stop to prevent the upstream boards from being loaded onto the drum until the drum is ready to accept a new board, whereby the boards are fed one-by-one to the loading device. The blade is configured such that, for each rotation of the drum, one board is loaded onto the device.
