PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound comprising a specific naphthoquinone derivative, useful as an electron transporting agent, being added to an electrophotographic photoreceptor for electrophotographic copy, printer, facsimile of ordinary paper, or the like. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I (R is a nitro group- containing monofunctional hydrocarbon group; ring A may be substituted) such as 2-phenyl-3-(p-nitrobenzoyl)-1,4-naphtoquinone. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting 1,3-diketo-2-phenylhydroindene of formula II with a bromide of formula III in the presence of sodium hydride to synthesize a 1,3- diketo-2-phenyl-2-nitro-substituted hydrocarbon carbonylmethylhydroindene of formula IV, converting this compound into a 2-phenyl-3-nitro-substituted hydrocarbon carbonyl-1,4-dinaphthol in the presence of sodium hydride and oxidizing the product with chloranil or the like.
