A transmitter, for transmitting signals along an electric fence line 2 uses capacitative coupling 6 between a user 1 and ground. The transmitter has a conductive plate 5 which is contacted by the user. The transmitter is coupled via capacitor 4 to a probe 3 which contacts the fence. Alternatively, the capacitor 4 may be inserted between the conductive plate and the transmitter. This arrangement dispenses with the need for an earth probe, and protects the user from electric shock from any voltage in the fence.
